The DDA package in the 1198 enables the retrieval and analysis of data collected from a previous track session or road trip and DTC monitors front and rear wheel speeds to detect rear wheel-spin under acceleration and electronically reduces engine power to restore traction.

DQS allows the throttle to remain open when changing-up through the gearbox, helping to save vital seconds in the pursuit of faster lap-times.

The 1198 was born to perform and with a colossal 97lb-ft (13.4kgm) of torque from its Testastretta Evoluzione engine and dry weight of just 171kg (377lb) it always delivers.

Its victory-driven technology comes directly from Ducatis World Championship-winning race bikes - and its evident in every detail of the bike.

Fully adjustable Showa front suspension carries radial mountings designed for the awesome stopping power generated by Brembo Monobloc callipers and 330mm discs.

The Testastretta Evoluzione engine is the crowning glory of Ducatis development and perfection of the L- Twin engine.

Ducati share the reward for that commitment with World Championship- winning technologies constantly flowing from the factory race team into production engines.

The incredible 1198 (and 1198 SP) is powered by a liquid cooled, L-Twin, Desmodromic engine that produces 170hp (125kW) @ 9,750rpm and a class-beating 97lb-ft (13.4kgm) of torque @ 8,000rpm.

The 1198 achieves its capacity by using exactly the same 106 x 67.9 bore and stroke as the factory race bike.

Volumetric efficiency through the four valves per cylinder is optimised with valve diameters at 43.5mm for the inlet and 35.5mm for the exhaust. They are actuated by racing-type rocker arms, super- finished for reduced friction and fatigue, and double overhead camshafts with radical profiles.

The incredible valve performances achieved are only possible because of Ducatis unique Desmodromic system, where valve closure is activated mechanically.

Since its introduction in September 1998, BMWs R1100S has been a popular bike with many a sports tourer fan. The S model features the most powerful boxer motor ever fitted to BMW, yet with its sporty looks, long-leggedness and comfortable riding position, this bike is equally adept at traveling long distances and will certainly rattle a few riders on your favourite road or track!

Could this be the ultimate Q bike? It may be.

The 1100S looks very much the modern bike, dare I say stylish with its twin under-seat exhausts, funky headlights and single-side swingarm. The 1/2 body work is true to BMW and is functional yet modern looking, and allows enough of the mechanical components to be viewed to onlookers. Besides, how can you disguise those huge cylinders even if you wanted to?

I had the opportunity to combine a long trip with a serious track session last month when a group of us went to Germany. Whilst we were there it would have been rude indeed to not go to the Nurburgring circuit for a few days to have a play with the Beemer on track! I had the bike from BMW at Thorne for just over a week, and in that time managed to put some 1250 miles on it. Naturally I spent a considerable amount of time on the bike, either on UK roads, French, Belgian and German motorways, and local roads (the good ones) in and around the Nurburgring. The bike did everything I asked of it and was a complete joy to ride over any period of time.

Now all BMW boxers are a bit quirky with their funny suspension, lift on acceleration and they kick left when you rev them, this 1100S is no different, in fact possibly due to its higher powered motor and free revving nature it actually feels worse that the others in the movement stakes. You still get vibrations at an uncommonly high frequency for a twin, and theres still that strange Paralever shaft-drive clunk when the bike is put into gear. The built in passenger grab rails (under the solo cowl) face inward and are almost useless, but they look great and are well integrated into the tail section behind the seat, which, unlike most other BMW models, is not adjustable. Neither are the handlebars or footpegs, for that matter, but when it comes down to it and you have to ride it for the next 300 mile stretch, this BMW comes through in splendid fashion.

Setting off in tourer mode sees the BMW become a very capable luggage horse, for some reason I seem to never be able to travel light, this time I had a fully packed pair of Oxford Throwover soft panniers and a large tail bag containing two sets of full leathers and boots over the top when I left! It was no problem to get all this on the bike even without many real tie downs available. Strapping everything on was not a problem as I decided to utilise the centre stand (yes it has one!) enabling me to get everything straight and balanced. So off we went straight down the motorways for some 150 miles to Dover from Oxford for the first leg of the trip.

For over seven decades now, 6-cylinder in-line engines have stood for fascinating engine technology in automobiles at BMW more than with any other brand. With the new K 1600 GT and K 1600 GTL, BMW motorcycles are now available for the first time with a 6-cylinder in-line power unit developed in-house. The two touring motorcycles have a supreme, impressive and equally distinctive appearance, creating a desire to travel at first sight.



Riding dynamics, long-distance suitability and comfort.



For decades, 6-cylinder in-line engines have exercised a special fascination. In addition to their perfect running smoothness they also offer supreme output and torque, giving the rider powerful emotional impressions.

In addition to safety, equipment and comfort, prestige and dynamic performance are the key criteria for a supreme touring bike. With the most compact in-line 6-cylinder engine in serial motorcycle production to date, the K 1600 GT and the K 1600 GTL penetrate a whole new dimension in terms of riding properties, long-distance suitability and comfort. They combine maximum agility and riding dynamics with a luxurious overall package. With an engine output of 118 kW (160 bhp) and a maximum torque of 175 Newton metres, their 6-cylinder engine provides superb propulsion in all conditions.

Lightest and most compact serial production 6-cylinder in-line engine in a motorcycle > 1000 cc.



Previously, the in-line arrangement of six cylinders resulted in either very long or very wide constructions, depending on the installation position, which led to drawbacks in terms of chassis geometry, weight distribution and centre of gravity. This where the K 1600 GT and K 1600 GTL break new ground.



Weighing 102.6 kilograms, the engine is by far the lightest serially produced 6-cylinder in-line engine for motorcycles in the class > 1000 cc. What is more, the engine is significantly narrower in construction width than all other 6-cylinder in-line motorcycles in serial production to date. With this system, globally unique on the motorcycle market, the rider can conveniently press a button to electronically adapt not only the rebound damping properties of the front and rear spring strut but also the spring rest ("spring preload") of the rear spring strut as well as the latters spring rate and therefore the "hardness" of the suspension. The seat is height-adjustable in the rider area so that it can be adapted to individual needs.

In the K 1600 GT, the body colours of Light Grey metallic and Vermilion Red metallic create a fascinating contrast with the frame and wheels in Ostra Grey and the engine in Platinum metallic matt. The colouring especially highlights the bikes technical components. The lines are concentrated and give the motorcycle a marked sense of agility.



With its emphasis on comfort and equipment, the K 1600 GTL has a powerful presence and elegance with elongated lines.
